Join Date: Sep 2020 Location: USA - '09 2WD Posts: 84 | Oil Filter Wrench Size I've gone to a few auto parts stores as well as Walmart and Ace Hardware, but none has the correct size for the OEM oil filter wrench our trucks use. I'm not looking for the band, strap, or universal type wrench and I'm not willing to pay the dealer their outrageous price for that wrench. The type I'm searching for is the one pictured here. Mine is a V6, not sure if V8 uses the same. If you have any leads that would be awesome. Thanks. Attached Images

Join Date: Oct 2020 Location: Denver, CO Posts: 104 | The one I have used successfully on my V6 is labeled 73mm with 14 flutes and 3/8" drive. Its a Capri tool that also fits a 996 T 3.6, so I think its maintained the dimensions. Id check Amazon lol | ||

| There is no specific / universal filter wrench for “your” vehicle. Every filter brand is unique in size. Bring your new or favorite filter to advance auto parts and choose the wrench that fits it. They come in various sizes. One will fit and the cost $5-&10. Dont over complicate it. If you switch filter brands, your wrench may no longer fit. I’m partial to Purolator filters *Handy tip #354, with a permanent marker, write the milage of when you installed the filter, on the filter itself. Join Date: Sep 2018 Location: iowa Posts: 904 | the universal band type filter wrenches work great & avoid the hassle you are running into here where you cant find the right size specific for your filter. & on these V6 engines, its so easy to get to the filter that if you or a previous person doesnt over tighten it, they can usually be removed by hand. then when installing a new filter dont gorilla tighten it down... i install & remove most my filters by hand, with a properly lubed gasket they only need about 1/2-3/4 turn to seal. | ||

It's specific to the filter used, although I would imagine (unconfirmed theory) manufacturers more-or-less tend to use the same diameter/flute arrangement for filters with the same vehicle application. If you only need to use a wrench for removal, I'm a fan of the 3-claw universal ratcheting gizmos...about $8 from most vendors. Allows me to cover everything from my lawn mower filter to my dad's F-150 (that filter is at the upper end of the tool's diameter spec). However, if you have a reason to need a tool for installation where you feel you can't get proper torque via hand tightening (ex. Purolator specs 3/4 to 1 turn after the gasket makes contact), the cap wrenches are the way to go, just be careful not to over tighten and distort the gasket. The universal claw tends to crush the filter a little, at least with Purolators. Harbor Freight has this kit of 6 caps in case you have multiple vehicle sizes to service or different branded filters for the 4Runner need a different cap. Senior Member | I've never used an oil filter wrench on my v6. They don't need to be tightened too the moon, gasket does a fine job with them on there hand tight. A little fresh oil on the gasket helps to prevent them from sticking when removing. I also write the mileage on the filter | |||

| Not adding anything- but agree with all. Certainly when you install them they just need to be snugged. That said I have had a few that get really wedged on there and ive had to resort to some more challenging ways to remove them. I always use different filters depending on the deal I find, so it is frustrating that my socket/ wrench doesnt always fit __________________ All you need to go off road is to be willing to get some scrapes and dents along the way | |||

Those are nice, except on some diesels, which can be torqued on there pretty good causes the jaws to dig into the filter and collapse it. This style works similarly except it uses teeth to grip onto the filter. Hands down the best one I've used. Attached Images

Does the valve allow the thick oil to fully drain from the bottom of the oil pan? Looks to me like the valve threads would stand too tall in the pan stopping all the crud from draining completely. Id be curious, once you drain with the valve, remove the valve and see if anything more drains out. Downside to buying in bulk, I have 5 $8 filters now for a Lexus car I no longer own.
