Air jordan 4 retro black and red

Air Jordan 4 sneakers debuted in February 1989 during the NBA All-Start Game. They are the fourth installment of the signature shoes designed for the Bulls' legend Michael Jordan.

Created by Tinker Hatfield, Air Jordan 4 shared many similarities to its predecessor - Air Jordan 3. The shoes featured the classic Air Max cushion, enlarged tongue, and "Nike Air" logo on the heel. It does not mean Tinker did not bring something new to the table, though. Air Jordan 4 introduced plastic lace eyelet wings and netting on the upper. Hatfield introduced this feature to reduce weight, combining a more casual style with utility.

When first released, the price of Air Jordan 4 shoes was $110 and was available in four shades of color -"Black Cement", "White Cement", "Military Blue", and "Fire Red". To no surprise, the fourth Jordans became an instant hit. It's the model worn by MJ during "The Shot" - the infamous buzzer-beater that won Bulls the series over Cleveland Cavaliers.

The shoes returned to stores in 1999, a year after Jordan retired from the Chicago Bulls. The original "White Cement", "Black Cement" colors returned. Nike also introduced two "LS" (Lifestyle) models, which became the first Jordan sneakers to feature the famous Jumpman logo.

In 2005, the Jordan 4 made yet another return with the Laser editions, and then in 2006 with the Jordan "Thunder" and "Lightning" models. The only problem was that the shoes lacked the quality they used to have. Many fans were also displeased by the lack of the "Nike Air" sign, which made a return in the 2016 Jordan 4 White Cement edition.

As of today, Air Jordan 4 remains one of the most popular models in the Nike Air brand. All thanks to its eye-catching design and scarcity. Available in a variety of colorways, Air Jordan 4 is a must-have for any sneaker collector.

The year was 1989. The shoe: the Air Jordan 4. It was the first time the Air Jordan enjoyed a global release, and the shoe came in four colorways. It was that same year, on May 7, that Michael Jordan closed the season with one of the most legendary plays in basketball history.

Snag a piece of that Air Jordan heritage with a pair of Air Jordan 4s from Hibbett | City Gear.

Race Against the Clock

The Chicago Bulls were down one point with only a few seconds remaining on the clock. Jordan drives the ball and then he soars into the air, making his legendary buzzer-beating move (dubbed "The Shot") - propelling the Bulls into the next round of the playoffs. The Shot stunned the world and the shoes on His Airness’ feet? The Air Jordan 4.

Legendary Player, Legendary Shoes

Nike designer Tinker Hatfield dreamed up the AJ 4 with plenty of input from Michael Jordan and an emphasis on true performance. A rubber sole and a visible Nike Air unit in the midsole added bounce, cushioning and incredible traction. The biggest change with this model from previous Jordans was a molded layer of urethane-coated mesh netting on the shoe’s upper.

The Air Jordan 4 lace locks featured plenty of holes to allow each wearer to customize the way they lace up their shoes for more of a custom fit. The Black and Cement Gray colorway also got the Durabuck treatment — a lighter, more durable synthetic that mimicked Nubuck. The shoe’s tongue featured the Jumpman Flight logo, with Nike Air branding at the heel tab.

Pop Culture Kicks

On top of its spectacular design, the shoe appeared in Spike Lee’s film “Do the Right Thing,” going beyond merely impacting the game of basketball and making its mark on pop culture. The shoe got its first retro release a decade later, in ’99. Another hallmark of the Air Jordan 4: it was the first in the AJ line to enjoy a collaboration. Jordan teamed up with Undefeated, an L.A. sneaker boutique, for an extremely limited run of sneakers — the Undefeated x Jordan 4 — that got auctioned off. That same year, Eminem teamed up for another limited collab — Air Jordan 4 Encore — to promote the release of his new album. Both of these hard-to-find releases are true collectibles, commanding top-notch figures.

Today, the AJ 4 endures, enjoying new colorway releases and special collaborations. As a Jordans retailer, let Hibbett | City Gear connect you with a pair of these transcendent shoes first blasted into the sports stratosphere by The Shot. Find the shoes in full family sizing in-stores and online.
