My dad has a Chevy with a 6.0 gas and 275,000 miles. 15-40 is the only thing he has ever put in it. digfasterSubject: RE: 15W-40 in 6.0L gas ? |

147,000 miles and don't use oil, if it works don't fool with it, wouldn't think one more case of oil would make too many problems. I never liked changing brands of oil or weights of oil midstream unless I was having problems. Just my way of thinking. Dan LoehrSubject: RE: 15W-40 in 6.0L gas ? |

I put 15-40 in a 4.3 V6 one time pegged the oil pressure decided not to do that again but it called for 5W30 --try it and see how much higher the pressure is ---that is if you have a gauge on the truckAn idea possibly worth what it costs Good luck-- Dan

Was told not to use heavy oils in newer engines because it's to heavy for the oil journals. cainfarmerSubject: RE: 15W-40 in 6.0L gas ? |

I've ran JD 15w-40 in my 02 Chevrolet for the last 185,000 miles. No problem here hwdcneSubject: RE: 15W-40 in 6.0L gas ? |

With the amount of miles you have, everything is probably a little looser then factory specs. The 15-40 would probably be fine. I wouldn't put it in a new vehicle with the close tolerances and also warranty would probably be void.

The biggest problem I see is the 15W40 is a diesel oil with an additive package designed for diesel engines. Patrick ranchermanSubject: RE: 15W-40 in 6.0L gas ? |
I use 15w40 Conoco fleet in every thing that has an oil pan. Tractors, cars, pickups, 4 wheelers. regardless of fuel; gasoline, diesel, propane. Been doing this for more than 20 years.. on the same machines... can't be too bad on them!
How's that for simplifying inventory in the shop?

We ran 15W-40 in 4.3's in a fleet I worked in in the past, 200,000 plus on them without problems. Even ran it in the service truck air compressor.

He changed the oil and put in 15w40. Engine began acting up. I forget after 15 years, running rough or something. Took it to the dealer and talked to the service manager.
"You're a farmer?"
"Yes."
"Changed your own oil?"
"Yes."
"Put 15 40 in it like everything else on the farm?"
"Yes."
"Well drain it out and put in the oil Chevrolet SAYS to put in it."
Solved the problem.

I've seen a couple of guys have trouble with getting oil in the lifters with the thicker oil in these newer engines. I would run what the manual recommends. BShaulerSubject: RE: 15W-40 in 6.0L gas ? |

I have run 15w-40 Cen-Pe-Co in everything on the farm. My wife's 08 Edge has 180,000 miles on it and has had it ever since i changed the oil at 500 miles.. The dealer told me I was going to ruin the motor with that thick oil. Thin oil is nothing but the company's trying to get the last little bit of fuel mileage for the gov regs. My 13 Harley even says in the manual to use 15w-40 diesel oil in it. And that is what I run. Just remember that the bigger the spread in the numbers you are just living on viscosity improver's. Syn oil is not better, it just last longer. Everyting else about syn oil is just marketing hype. cotmanSubject: RE: 15W-40 in 6.0L gas ? |
