California 2nd stimulus when will it come

California is still sending out the Golden State Stimulus checks up to $1,100 to eligible residents.

To qualify for the stimulus, you must have filed your 2020 taxes by Oct. 15 and have made less than $75,000 for the 2020 tax year. You also must have been a California resident for more than half of 2020 and not be claimed as a dependent by a taxpayer.

The state has been sending out the stimulus checks since October. If you haven’t gotten yours yet, didn’t receive your tax refund or owed money when you were filing taxes, you will receive a paper check via mail, according to the State of California Franchise Tax Board.

The payments will be mailed to the address on your 2020 tax return. You can see the mailing period based on the last three numbers of your postal code.

The following California ZIP codes are up next, including many in the Sacramento area. Here are the mailing time frames:

  • 720 - 927: 12/13/2021 - 12/31/2021

  • 928 - 999: 12/27/2021 - 1/11/2022

These ZIP codes have already been mailed, or are expected to be by Friday:

  • 000 - 044: 10/6/2021 - 10/27/2021

  • 045 - 220: 10/18/2021 - 11/5/2021

  • 221 - 375: 11/1/2021 - 11/19/2021

  • 376 - 584: 11/15/2021 - 12/3/2021

  • 585 - 719: 11/29/2021 - 12/17/2021

It can take up to three weeks for you to get your check in your mailbox once they are sent out.

If you want to estimate how much your stimulus check will amount to, you can find out online at the SCFTB website.

If you are eligible for a California stimulus payment and have not received it yet, it's highly likely your payment is coming through the mail.

The California Franchise Tax Board is distributing the 9 million stimulus payments via both direct deposit and paper check, and the agency said that most direct deposits were made by Oct. 31. The next wave of paper checks will begin to be mailed on Nov. 1, but it could take weeks before your check hits the mail.

To this point, about 4.5 million payments have been made. The tax board expects that all payments will have gone out by the end of the year. Whether you receive a direct deposit or paper check depends on which option you checked on your tax return.

Oct. 15 was the last day for Californians to file their tax returns to qualify for the stimulus payments. The tax board determines eligibility for the payments based off tax returns.

The tax board said it could not release the payments all at once due to a series of constraints, including "the state's ability to validate eligibility, protect against fraud and issue GSS II payments simultaneously with other mandatory disbursements," it said.

The state also has "various processing constraints, including printing and mailing," the tax voard added.

Wondering how much you'll receive? The Franchise Tax Board has a handy tool on its website that helps you determine the amount.

Generally, if you qualified for the first Golden State Stimulus payment and claimed a credit of one or more dependents, you'll receive $500. If you did not qualify for that stimulus payment and did not claim a credit of one or more dependents, you'll receive $600. If you did not qualify for that stimulus and claimed one or more dependents, you could receive $1,100. Lastly, if you qualified for the stimulus and did not claim a credit for one or more dependents, you do not qualify for the second stimulus payment.

The funds were drawn from federal recovery funds and California's budget surplus. Newsom said about two-thirds of residents will be eligible for the $600 payments. Those with children will receive an additional $500.

On 13 July, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law that will allow for the sending of the second round of direct payments. Those who received a check during the first round are not eligible for a second.

However, taxpayers in the care of children who meet the income requirements will receive an additional $500 payment.

The California Franchise Tax Board (CFTB), which is responsible for distributing the checks, has updated its website to provide support to those hoping to track their payment.

Tracking your payment

Most recipients will receive their check through direct deposit and can expect it between now and 15 October. The CFTB began depositing the checks on 1 September.

For those who submitted their taxes after 20 August 2021, an additional forty-five-day waiting period should be expected to allow for their tax return and check to be processed.

The mailing of physical checks will begin on 4 October and run through December of this year. When to expect a physical check depends on the last three digits of the recipient's zip code. The CFTB has stated that "If your tax return is processed after the date of your scheduled ZIP code payment, allow up to 60 days."

When can I expect the second Golden State stimulus?

Payments won't be scheduled until your tax return has been processed. You can review overall wait times for tax returns and refund processing timeframes here. If you filed your tax return after Sept. 1 expect up to 45 days after the return has been processed, the FTB says.

Why haven't I got my 2nd California stimulus?

It is possible that some eligible California residents have not received their Golden State Stimulus checks because they did not file their taxes by the deadline. For some individuals, a delayed payment might be due to a pending Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).

When can I expect my California stimulus check?

If you are eligible, you will automatically receive a payment. Payments are expected to be issued between October 2022 and January 2023. For taxpayers receiving a debit card, call 800-240-0223 to activate your card.

Will California get another stimulus check in 2022?

In June, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed California's budget for 2022-2023, which includes direct payments of $350 to $1,050 for 23 million Californians—more than half of the state's residents. Payments are slated to start rolling out on Oct. 7, the California Franchise Tax Board confirmed to Forbes Advisor.
