PSA: this is an old thread. hey, so I just got hired and started work today. I couldn't find my birth certificate or social security card this morning or tonight. no idea where they would be because I can't remember the last time I would have even used them (maybe to get my drivers' permit?). also, I don't have a passport - never been out of
the country. do I have any options? the employer needs proof of my eligibility to work in the US along with some form of government ID. I have military IDs, student IDs, a drivers' license, but no kind of paperwork. I just had my dad order a new birth certificate but it will take 10-30 business days to process. do I have any options? kinda need this ASAP Last edited by a moderator:

Just show them your green card. KT
Simple, use your military ID and drivers license at the social security office to get a new SSN card. Most places you can get a birth certificate within 1 week if you are willing to pay the fees. Dec 27, 2001 47,371 14 61

how long does it take to get a new SSN card? My military ID has my SSN on it if that helps anything. Just go into a SS office and talk to them. Dec 27, 2001 47,371 14 61
Just go into a SS office and talk to them. IIRC, the application for the social security card is as good as the real thing
Contact your Secretary of State about your SS Card, it won't come for a bit though. For your BC, you need to go to your State Department that handles those types of things. Once again, you won't get the second copy for a while (unless you pay extra). Feb 6, 2002 31,249 19,619 136

Usually if you go to the county seat of your birth you can get an official copy that day or quickly. it looks like you could get a new SS card the same day but you need a birth certificate? I'm gonna call and ask if military ID is acceptable. pretty sure you have to be a citizen to be in the military - it's stupid that's not proof enough Dec 18, 2010 18,811 197 106

Found this via google search: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/employer/verifySSN.htm If you can't find actual ID, bring driver's license etc. and your social security number and see if they can verify with government while you get replacement (?)
List C (column 3). If SS, must be original or receipt + original within 90 days.

my mom/dad/sister have been looking all over my home home for either my birth certificate or social security card and can't find either. usually my dad is really good at keeping things like that organized so it's really surprising and frustrating to not have them from what I've found online, seems like I could get a SS card or receipt, but would need a birth
certificate to do so Its been 5 years since I had to do hiring paperwork, so I'm going off memory. I remember I9 and the 3 stupid columns.

Do you have your discharge papers? Not sure why they wouldn't take military ID and discharge papers until you get your BC.

Most likely. The recipt verifies that you qualify for an SS card. How long ago were you made the offer of employment?
Yah yah, I get that - just wasn't sure how "flexible" his employer might be if he's in the process of obtaining his BC. Read my last sentence, just not sure what their obligation would be in terms of a time limit.
