Dental Services

Effective January 1, 2021, the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) has contracted with DentaQuest and MCNA Dental  to provide dental benefits for qualified Medicaid enrollees. These plans are accountable to LDH and the state of Louisiana. Their contract requires adherence to detailed grievance and appeals requirements. Members have the right to appeal denied services, first to their plan, then to the State. There are also strict marketing guidelines that must adhere to with mandatory prior approval of marketing materials. LDH will monitor all complaints, grievances and appeals to assure that DentaQuest and MCNA Dental are accountable to the enrollees and the state. Complaints and any questions can be submitted by email to and the appropriate staff will address any issues or concerns.

Dental services for children

Apple Health (Medicaid) pays for covered dental services for eligible children, age 20 and younger. The Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends all children see a dentist by 12 months of age.

Some covered dental services include:

  • Routine exams
  • Cleaning
  • X-rays
  • Sealants
  • Fillings
  • Crowns
  • Fluoride application
  • Extractions (pulling teeth)
  • Orthodontic services are available for children with cleft palate or other serious dental problems (covers medically necessary services with prior authorization).

Dental services for adults

Apple Health (Medicaid) pays for covered dental services for adults (21 years and older).

Covered dental services include:

  • Routine exams
  • Cleaning
  • X-rays
  • Fillings 
  • Fluoride application
  • Extractions (pulling teeth)
  • Nitrous oxide
  • Other limited dental services, including:
    • Periodontal (gum disease)
    • Root canal (front teeth only)
    • Dentures/partials
    • Oral surgery

Dental services not covered for adults include:

  • Bridges
  • Crowns
  • Implants
  • Orthodontics

Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA)

Clients with the DDA designation are eligible to receive all Apple Health dental services as well as some additional services and/or increased frequency of services. Examples include but not limited to the following:

  • Exam - one additional per year all ages
  • Cleaning – three times a year all ages
  • Topical fluoride - an additional two times per year for adults
  • Sealants - additional coverage for premolar teeth
  • Stainless steel crowns - additional coverage for adults

Does North Carolina Medicaid cover dental for adults?

NC Medicaid Dental Coverage for Adults Generally, you can receive exams, cleanings, fillings, sealants, x-rays, extractions, and dentures. Surgeries and periodontal services are available when medically necessary, and root canals are available for those under 21.

What does Georgia Medicaid cover for dental in adults?

For adults, Georgia Medicaid covers only emergency dental care. Dental care is not mandatory and there are no minimum requirements for adult dental coverage.

COVERED SERVICES: Examination, x-rays (are only covered if in conjunction with the construction of a Medicaid-authorized denture) dentures, denture relines, and denture repairs. Only one complete or partial denture per arch is allowed in an eight-year period. The partial denture must oppose a full denture.
