Faint positive pregnancy test 3 weeks after abortion

Hi there, I had a medical abortion 27/4/18 first taking the mifepristone (I started bleeding the following morning even taking just that tablet) and then the misoprostal 38hours later…I felt sick quite quickly after orally taking the misoprostal but managed to keep them in my mouth for the half hour and was bleeding and cramping very badly even before that half hour was up..I did however throw up shortly after I swallowed the tablets. I was clotting and bleeding heavy immediately and cramping terribly but that calmed after about 5 hours…I bled for almost 2 weeks after (quitw heavy for one week and then a bit lighter the next) I had protected sex the week after a few times and then went on the mini pill at about 2 weeks. Although I think everything did what it was supposed to and felt back to my normal self almost immediately I took a preg test yesterday 24/5 and it’s still a strong positive!? I’m so scared I’ll have to go through it again! I was just under 6 weeks pregnant when I had the abortion…what do you think?! Thanks

How does a medical abortion work and what are the side effects?

Abortions are very safe when performed or assisted by specialists. However, any medical treatment or surgical procedure carries some side effects.

In this short video, Dr Sarah Salkeld, Clinical Lead for Early Medical Abortion at MSI Reproductive Choices UK, explains how medical abortions work: the difference between the two abortion tablets (mifepristone and misoprostol) and what to expect in terms of side effects.

What can you expect after an abortion?

It’s good to know what’s normal after an abortion, so you know what to expect and what to look out for.

Everyone will have a different experience after either a medical or surgical abortion has been completed. Usually you will experience some bleeding (ranging from spotting to heavy clots). This can continue up to your next period and may be unpredictable, irregular, or prolonged. It's important you use sanitary towels and not tampons or menstrual cups as this will help to prevent infection. It’s also normal to have crampy pains (cramps).

Pregnancy symptoms will start to settle after a couple of days. Nausea and vomiting are one of the first symptoms to disappear after treatment. It is common to have tender breasts for several weeks.

Different feelings may come up for people after an abortion, including relief and sadness. These are all normal things to feel. We’re here to talk at any time and can arrange post-abortion counselling, either face-to-face or over the phone. If you have any concerns call our aftercare line to speak to a nurse.

How long does the pain last after an abortion?

Following an abortion, cramps can be constant or can come and go.

It's not unusual to continue to get cramping on and off in the first 2 weeks after treatment.

Pain relief after abortion

We'll give you advice on pain relief tablets such as paracetamol, codeine, or ibuprofen. Please do not take aspirin as it can increase bleeding.

Here are some other things you can do to lessen the pain:

  • Apply a heat pad or (warm) hot water bottle wrapped in a towel or blanket to your lower abdomen.
  • Wear comfy, loose clothing.
  • Ensure you're comfortable and relaxed at home.

If you have any worries about any pain you experience following your abortion, you can call our aftercare line on 0345 122 1441 any time to speak to a nurse.

Important things to remember after an abortion

Here are some important things to bear in mind:

  • Please wait for 3 weeks after your abortion before taking a pregnancy test. This is because some pregnancy hormones can be present for up to 3 weeks following an abortion, which can give a positive test result even though you are no longer pregnant. If the pregnancy test is positive please call our aftercare line as soon as possible.
  • It’s important to know that it is possible to get pregnant almost immediately following an abortion. If you do not want to become pregnant, we recommend that you have contraception ready for after your treatment. We can talk to you about different types of contraception to help you find a method that suits you.

Can a pregnancy test be positive 3 weeks after miscarriage?

It takes time for your hormones to return to their pre-pregnancy levels after a miscarriage. The amount of the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) may still be high enough to trigger a positive result on a pregnancy test for several weeks after a miscarriage.

How long is hCG in system after abortion?

The disappearance of HCG from urine is exponential, with a half-life value of 1.3 days. A urine pregnancy test with a sensitivity of 1 IU/ml wil nearly always be negative in the course of 2 weeks after abortion. A positive test 4 weeks after abortion indicates an incomplete abortion or persistent trophoblast.

Can a pregnancy test still come out positive after an abortion?

Shortly after an abortion, a pregnancy test may give a false-positive result. This occurs because the body still contains significant levels of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). While hCG levels tend to fall quickly after an abortion, they can take several days or weeks to return to baseline.

Is faint positive at 3 weeks normal?

Any positive line, no matter how faint, means your result is pregnant. Levels of hCG in your body will increase over the course of your pregnancy. If you test early, your hCG levels may be still be low and you'll see a faint positive line.

What does a faint line on a pregnancy test mean after abortion?

If you take a home pregnancy test after a miscarriage, your test may reveal a faint positive line. This is because your body may have residual pregnancy hormone in its system, although you're no longer expecting. You may experience bleeding that resembles your menstrual cycle and light cramping.
