Overall Opinion:

I feel like I’ve been hitting some duds in the probiotic department lately and Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Probiotics was a pleasant surprise for me.

I’ve passed by this exact probiotic a handful of times while perusing the supplements at my beloved Whole Foods store.

So I was super excited when it came time to try it out myself.  And needless to say, I wasn’t disappointed!

I gave this probiotic a whopping 4 out of 5 stars, which is a rarity from me!

I’m so picky and have tried out hundreds of probiotics that have left me wowed, underwhelmed and everywhere in between.

Typically, I’m not a big fan of these crazy potent probiotics.  It has a staggering 50 billion CFU and 16 different probiotic strains.

But I’m pleasantly surprised with how much I love this one.

It’s a doctor-formulated blend specifically for women’s vaginal, digestive, and immune health.

You just take 1 capsule daily and it can be taken with or without food (mega points for easy breeziness).

The capsules are vegetarian (more points added) and can be opened up and put directly into water or juice.

So that’s wonderful if you’re not a fan of swallowing pills.

The pill bottle has a convenient, easy to open flip top but more importantly uses desiccant-lined bottle technology for shelf stable probiotics.  AKA no refrigeration required, YAY!  Just store them in a cool, dry place.

I definitely saw a difference after taking this probiotic for a month.  I struggle with frequent yeast infections and painful IBS symptoms like constipation, bloating, and uncomfortable gas.

I was so happy to see some relief from all of these issues!

The ingredients are very allergy friendly and are gluten free, dairy free, soy free, non-GMO verified, and free of any icky artificial ingredients, fillers, or sweeteners.

Three little extra things I noticed are that Garden Of Life buys 100% certified renewable energy, the box is printed with vegetable based inks on 100% recycled material, and the bottle itself is recyclable, too.  Super cool and a plus for the environment!

The company offers a 30- day satisfaction guarantee if you’re not happy with the product.

I’m incredibly happy with this probiotic but my job is to knit pick these supplements for you all, so let me switch over to what I don’t like.

The capsules themselves are a bit larger but they do contain a ton of ingredients, so it makes sense they’d be bigger in size.

This formula is intended for adults only (specifically women) and aren’t safe for children.

Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Probiotics is definitely expensive and costs more than your typical probiotic, but I do believe the price is worth it.

I did get some negative side effects in the first few days of taking it, which is never fun but luckily they subsided after the first week.

All in all, I’m very impressed and pleased with this probiotic and I’d recommend it for women as a daily supplement especially if you need some intensive care.

The Details:

Ingredients/Strain Profile

No surprise here, Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Probiotics has 50 billion CFU and 16 probiotic strains.

This is absolutely a powerful probiotic and I usually don’t like brands that are overly potent but this one was different.

A board-certified neurologist, David Perlmutter, M.D, formulated this probiotic exclusively for women and their specific needs.

It uses a high probiotic count and diverse strains to support women’s vaginal health, immune system, and digestive system.

40 billion CFU come from Lactobacillus cultures and 10 billion CFU come from Bifidobacterium.

One strain I really like is Lactobacillus reuteri.

Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) is a well-studied probiotic bacterium that is naturally found our skin, urinary tract, and gastrointestinal tract and is in breast milk.

Studies suggest that L. reuteri can produce antimicrobial molecules, which makes it able to prevent the colonization of harmful pathogens in the body.  This strain benefits the immune system by reducing the production of inflammatory proteins while encouraging the growth of regulatory T cells (cells that regulate our trusty immune system).

Additional research shows that L. reuteri is able to strengthen the intestinal barrier and supplementation of this probiotic may be a potential preventative or therapeutic way to fight inflammatory diseases.

Another probiotic strain to make note of is Lactobacillus fermentum.

One study shows that women taking a daily oral capsule of L. fermentum (coupled with L. rhamnosus – which is also in this strain profile) is able to significantly reduce yeast, increase vaginal lactobacilli, and help prevent potential harmful bacteria and yeast from colonizing in the vagina.  These stats were found at day 28, 60 and 90 of the treatment.

The study states it’s safe to take these 2 probiotic strains daily and encourages it for the vaginal benefits.

Take note that it may take up to a month to start seeing some changes, so make sure you stick with your daily supplement for at least 30 days in order to benefit from the friendly bacteria.

Lactobacillus fermentum may also be beneficial for the GI tract, alleviating constipation, improving mood and cognitive function, and increasing lactose tolerance.

Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Probiotics includes an organic prebiotic fiber blend in the ingredients, which is very helpful.

Prebiotic fiber acts as a natural fertilizer to the friendly bacteria and helps them thrive.

Allergy Concerns

I’m pretty blown with this formula.

It’s so allergy friendly and Garden of Life seem to go the extra mile for us.

This is a raw probiotic supplement that’s gluten free, dairy free, and soy free.

The capsules are also vegetarian (which is a fantastic plus) and it’s non-GMO verified.

There are no carriers, fillers, artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, or preservatives.

I’m just so impressed and also mind blown because there’s nothing extra in these capsules and I don’t even know how it’s possible.

The other ingredients only include:  Non-GMO vegetable cellulose (capsule).

Talk about a pure product!

Price/Value

We’ve got an expensive probiotic on our hands with this one.

On the Garden Of Life website, a 30 capsule bottle is $33.59.

I’m not sure if this price ever really changes but it say it’s normally $41.99, but sometimes they just use this as a sales tactic and it’s always the discounted price.

You just take 1 capsule daily, so the bottle lasts 1 month.

The cost of a daily serving works out to $1.11, which is notably higher than your average probiotic.

I’m all about cost friendly products and this one is very expensive.

Nonetheless, the value matches the price and I think it’s a very solid product.

So I’m okay with the higher price tag and really enjoy this supplement.

Side Effects

This probiotic is very strong, so I assumed I’d experience some side effects.

My assumption was right and I definitely had side effects for the first few days.

It wasn’t awful but I was very aware of the symptoms.

My belly was cramping and I felt bloated.

Thankfully it only lasted a few days while my body adjusted to the probiotic.

If you’re new to probiotics, be very careful with this one!

Don’t take more than the recommended dose of 1 daily.

It says you can open these capsules up, so if you have a super sensitive stomach or friendly bacteria is new territory for you, and then maybe only take half the dose.

For instance, open the capsule and pour half in your drink or however you’d like to take it and gradually up the amount throughout the first week.

This is just a personal recommendation but it may help ease you into this more potent probiotic!

Guarantee

Luckily, Garden of Life does have a guarantee for you!

Especially since this probiotic is on the more expensive end.

Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Probiotics Review

How long does it take for Garden of Life probiotics to work?

If you are taking a high quality, multispecies and multistrain supplement, you can expect to notice initial improvements and health benefits of probiotics in your digestion as early as the first 1-2 weeks after starting your probiotic. Depending on how sensitive you are, many people feel a difference after a few days.

What is Garden of Life probiotics good for?

It effectively supports a healthy immune system, supports vaginal and digestive health and contains 16 different strains. They're raw, non GMO, gluten and dairy free.

Is 80 billion CFU probiotics Too Much?

Probiotic doses are measured by colony-forming units (CFUs), and they range from 1 billion to 100 billion CFUs. Perlmutter considers 100 billion to be the highest daily dosage anybody needs to take — and most people need much less than that.

Do probiotics detox the body?

By taking probiotics, it is increasing the number of good bacteria which can detoxify your system and help you absorb nutrients more efficiently. If you have been taking too many antibiotics, the probiotics can balance the negative effects of that as well.
