Homemade carpet cleaning solution for bissell little green

Today’s post begins with an exciting announcement — we have a new puppy in the family! My son Erik and daughter-in-law Kaitlyn (who also happens to be the OGT Team’s photographer extraordinaire) recently adopted a golden retriever puppy. His name is Duncan and we’re all absolutely smitten.

But a new puppy means new messes, so when I started seeing the BISSELL Little Green Multi-Purpose Portable Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner in several videos across TikTok, I decided I ought to look into it on behalf of not only our new puppy parents, but all of you as well!

You can watch video after video of people using this little machine to remove dirt and stains from their couches and carpets. Who wouldn’t be intrigued to find out if it was really as good as the videos implied?

I started my research about this mini cleaning machine on its Amazon product page, where there are more rave reviews than you could possibly read in one sitting.

So far, so good — I decided to take the plunge and get the BISSELL Little Green Carpet Cleaner and give it a whirl, and since several of the videos I’d seen mentioned the cleaning solution with Oxi specifically, I made sure to buy that as well. (There is a small bottle of cleaning solution included with the machine, but apparently the Oxi solution packs more of a punch against dirt.)

Would you believe that the day we took the photos for this post, Duncan just happened to have a small accident on the carpet at our office? Normally I’d be upset, but it was the perfect chance to put this machine to the test! I also tried it out on an upholstered headboard that was looking a little grimy. 

I’m pleased to report that this little cleaning machine was every bit as effective at removing these stains as the videos I had seen suggested it would be. It provides a much deeper clean than your average stain treatment, and it rinses both the mess and the cleaning solution out really well, which means no lingering residues.

How To Use It

The machine itself is very simple to set up. You just add hot water and the recommended amount of cleaning solution to the clean tank and fire it up!

The instructions recommend pre-treating heavily soiled surfaces by spraying the area and letting it sit for 10 minutes or so before using the vacuum function to lift the cleaning solution and grime out of the fabric, so that’s what I did.

I’m glad I did too, because I think it really helped break down the stains. When the wait was over, I was delighted (and a but repulsed) as murky, dark water poured through the hose and into the reservoir. It was very satisfying!

3 Things To Be Aware Of:

1. Dirty water can drip from the tank when you remove it, so be sure to place the entire machine over the sink before taking the tank off.
2. The tank for the water and cleaning solution is pretty small, so it’s best to reserve it for small jobs like stain removal — that’s what it’s designed for, after all.
3. If the dirty water is really grimy, you may want to pour it out outside rather than down your drains to prevent any plumbing issues.

The Last Word

At the end of the day, the BISSELL Little Green Carpet Cleaner is an effective, lightweight cleaning machine that doesn’t take up much storage space, and I’m already looking forward to testing it out on other surfaces. I would definitely recommend it if you frequently find yourself treating stains on carpet or upholstery!
