How to adjust hunter sprinkler heads without key

Rotor Frequently Asked Questions

All Hunter Rotor models, including the PGM, SRM, PGJ, PGP, PGP Ultra and I-20, adjust the same way and utilize the same adjustment tool, the white Hunter wrench.

The instructions you see below, as well as in the Video, “PGP Rotors Adjustment Instructions”, use the PGP Rotor as an example.

Sprinkler head clarification help needed!

Quick question.......Need to adjust my Hunter PGP sprinkler head but do NOT have the adjustment tool. I found this thread which indicates "Use a 1/4 inch flat-blade screwdriver to adjust the arc. Use a 3/32 inch allen wrench to adjust the distance"

http://www.lawnsite.com/showthread.php?t=111452

However after watching this the Hunter adjustement tool looks to be only able to tweak the radius (on the left side) where as the right you simply take the shaft and turn it the desired spot.

The arc and distance adjustment in the video seem to be the same thing? And again seemed to be adjustable by use of allen wrench? Is a flatbead scredriver needed at all for the PGP Hunter? I'm a bit confused as the the first link seem to indicate so? Perhaps different versions of the the PGP?

you use the flat blade to adjust the left side. Normally, this is the other end of the hunter adjustment tool opposite the hex end.

How big of a flathead......anyone buy an adjustment tool at a store vs online.....

If i use a screwdriver will it damage the head as it seems to pushes down the "flaps" or will they spring back up?

Pushing down the flaps is not a problem. I would use as skinny a 1/4" screwdriver as you can find.

Ok I have figured out the radius adjustment....Now onto the distance and arc....My main question are they the same thing......Or is their a separate adjustment for arc and then another one for distance? It looks like using the allen wrench is the tool.....but am I still confused if their is both an arc and a distance setting?

Again these Hunter PGP heads

I think the only distance adjustment is the screw in front which alters the arc by making the spray pattern much more diffuse.

+1 Erio. Distance adjustment on those is only by the diffuser screw, and unless you have good reason to, leave it at the widest arc. It gives the best water distribution pattern.

Also, be careful when setting the right bounds. I do not think the hunter instructions say to turn the popup shaft like they do in the video. Sometimes that works but a few times, it caused some damage such that the rotor only did 360* after doing that maneuver. Hunter says to set the right at installation by screwing down the lower casing first, making sure the rotor is turned to the right, aiming it to the right bounds and then dropping it in and tightening the top lid.

How do you adjust a sprinkler head with a screwdriver?

At the top of the nozzle, you will find a small screw. Use a flat-headed screwdriver to turn the screw to reduce or extend the radius of the nozzle opening. Set the arc position by adjusting the stem to cover the spray distance you need.

What tool can I use to adjust sprinkler heads?

Slotted screwdriver: Some sprinkler heads can be adjusted using a thin slotted (flat head) screwdriver that most people have around the house. For example, Rain Bird sprinkler adjustment can often be done using a slotted screwdriver like the Klein Tools Flat Head Screwdriver.
