How to change the battery on bmw key fob

A few days ago, I went to the store. When I tried to lock and unlock my car, the key fob wasn't responding. How do I replace the battery in my BMW key fob?

Standard key fob batteries typically last for three or four years. Depending on the BMW key fob you have, it may be time for a replacement.

If you have a smart key or comfort access BMW key fob, you’ll need to replace the battery by following these quick steps:

  1. Purchase a CR2032 battery from an auto shop or department store. You can expect to pay about $2 for it.
  2. Remove the valet key by pressing the tab on your key fob.
  3. Use the key or a flathead screwdriver to pry open your battery cover.
  4. Remove the dead battery and replace it with the new one.
  5. Close your key fob and return the key to its housing.

If you can’t open your key fob because it has an indent in the side, you have a non-comfort access key fob. Since your key fob battery is rechargeable through your car’s ignition, you’ll need to go for a long drive to recharge the battery.

Once you’ve successfully replaced or recharged the battery, be sure to test it out by locking and unlocking the doors a few times. And before you head out again, take a moment to take a look at the Jerry app to find out how much you can save on your car insurance.

    • How do you change the battery in a BMW 328i key fob?

My car remote died, and I don’t have a backup. I need to install a new battery ASAP. How do you replace the key battery in a BMW 3 Series?

That sounds frustrating! Luckily, it’s pretty easy to change the battery in a BMW 328i key fob. Here’s how to do it:

    • First, press and hold the small button located at the base of your key fob. Doing so will allow you to remove the metal key from your fob.
    • Feel along the edge of the key fob until you locate a small hole. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or use your metal key to pry off the back panel of the key fob.
    • Carefully remove the old battery. Make sure to note where the negative and positive terminals are situated, as you’ll need to orient your new battery the same way.
    • Place your new battery in the key fob. Try not to touch the terminals as you do this since that can decrease the battery life of your key.
    • Finally, replace the back panel. You should feel a click when the two halves are properly attached. Then, you can insert the metal key and test out your new key fob battery!

Since you’re taking some time to change the battery in your car remote, why not take an extra minute to learn more about your car insurance options with the Jerry app? Hi guys, I'm driving a 2010 E90 320i. Felt that the remote is not sensitive when unlocking doors. Usually need to be very near to car or need to press unlock a few times. Could it be the battery weak or something else?

Where can I change the battery? Or can I DIY? The key that I'm holding is different from the post I found in here or in YouTube. View attachment 65133 View attachment 65134

      Any advice?

Just depress those 'parallel lines' and pull the normal key out, then use some pen or pencil or small fork(spelling checked) to open the rear cover and you will see a small battery inside. Change that.

If dunno, check youtube like brudder here said.

If still dunno, just go to hardware shop and the uncle owners probably have done this many times for customers.

If still dunno, then throw the key fob away. Order new one from PML (last one not I say one hor).

      Re: Key battery change

Some of the keys cannot be opened easily. Some are fixed - u can call up Performance and they will let you know if your battery can be changed easily or not. If it cannot be, like for the 7 series E65 / E66 which has a rechargeable battery - you will have to cut the key open.

The 7 series uses the rechargeable Panasonic VL2020. You can buy this battery at Sim Lim Square or Sim Lim Tower (Kim Chew) and ask the shop to solder for you. Cost will be less than 30 dollars.... which is better than buying a new key fob which costs 500 from Performance.

There are some articles online on this issue.

Basically, I used a blade to cut it open and use Gorilla Glue from Giant to glue it back. It takes an extended drive to charge the battery.
