During school holidays, you are allowed to work a maximum of 25 hours a week. You are only allowed to work a maximum of 5 hours on weekdays and Saturdays, and you’re only allowed to work a maximum of 2 hours on Sundays.

It is illegal to work during school hours, and you cannot work before 7 am and after 7 pm. However, check with your local council what bylaws there are; some councils will allow 14-year-olds to work before and after school. You check your local bylaws by contacting your council’s education department or education welfare service.

You must take at least a 1 hour break for every 4 hours worked, and you must have a 2-week break from working and school once a year.

Employment Law For a 14-Year-old

Employment law for a 14-year-old is something you must become an expert at before you start working! Unfortunately, because in the eyes of the law, you’re still a child and therefore you are not entitled to employment rights. You also cannot work in these places;

  • You cannot work in a factory or an industrial estate.
  • You cannot work in places like pubs or betting shops, or anywhere that has an age limit of at least 18 years old.
  • You cannot work in a place that may be harmful to your health or well-being.
