Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2022 Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2004 Released at a time when Luther was still recovering from the near fatal stroke he suffered in April of 2003, DANCE WITH MY FATHER quickly shot to #1 on Billboard's Hot 200 chart - his first album to do so. While the news surrounding his then-recent health scare certainly played a factor in the album's big debut, DANCE WITH MY FATHER was able to remain in the top ten for several more weeks because, simply put, it's a great album! While the album contains plenty of Luther's trademark ballads and mid-tempo cuts ("Buy Me a Rose" and "If I Didn't Know Better" are two of the best of each respective category), DANCE WITH MY FATHER also shows that he has not given up on incorporating hip hop into his sound. While I found much of the pseudo-hip hop on 1998's I KNOW to be trite and unconvincing, the collaborations with Foxy Brown, Busta Rhymes, and Queen Latifah that turn up on this recording are almost convincing. The only track that I dislike is the cloying "They Said You Needed Me," which closes the album and probably should have been left off completely. However, the highlight among hilights is inevitably the gorgeous title track, which simply towers above the others and will remain one the finest recordings of Vandross' 22 year career. But even without this priceless gem, the album as a whole would still be Luther's strongest effort since 1988's classic ANY LOVE and one of 2003's best discs. I just pray that Luther has a safe and speedy recovery, and that one day, if he so chooses, he will be able to record again. I played them so much that they started to skip on certain songs, especially "Dance with my Father." I introduced this song to my aunt. It became one of her favorite songs. When she developed dementia, this song became the only thing that would soothe her. We had to play it over and over for hours. During her last days of life, Alexa played Luther's CD nonstop.
