Popular Companies for Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) Degrees

Pay ranges for people with a Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) degree by employer.

In running text, use bachelor’s degree, bachelor of arts degree, bachelor of science in physics, master’s degree, doctorate, and the like in place of degree abbreviations because they are more readable; use abbreviations only when necessary to distinguish the specific type of degree or when using full terms would prove cumbersome, such as when there are multiple degrees; do not use periods; form the plural by adding an s; the word degree should not follow a degree abbreviation.

Do not list certificates (nursing, law, education, and the like) as degrees, but an exception is made to include the Farm and Industry Short Course (FISC) following an individual’s name because the program has a long and proud history at the UW.

Here are many of the degree abbreviations in use at the university:

  • BBA – bachelor of business administration
  • BM – bachelor of music

  • LLM – master of laws, but us ML instead
  • MA – master of arts, master’s degree

Hear From Our Current Students

Covid-19 has made my experience with PA school very different from what I had imagined, but Shenandoah’s program has managed to continue building a close knit community for students and faculty through difficult times. The open-minded, approachable faculty has helped me feel more at ease with constantly changing circumstances, and the repeated focus on patient care through our Clinical Integration course, zoom calls with patients, and covid friendly volunteer events serve as constant reminders as to why I choose PA. While this experience is not what I thought it would be, I am so thankful I am here!

Tanha Patel ’22, PA-S

I had been working in ophthalmology for about 5 years as a retinal angiographer when I realized that my love of medicine was pulling me towards the PA profession. When I visited Shenandoah University, everything just felt right. The caring nature of the faculty and the camaraderie of the students really drew me in. Even now, my favorite part about being a SUPA student is that I feel I can count on any one of my peers to help me in any way I would need.”

David Blumberg ’22, PA-S

After the long journey of applying to several PA schools, home is the first word I think of when describing Shenandoah University’s PA program.  I have built some strong friendships with classmates and the faculty are so open, warm, and encouraging that it puts my worries to ease.  I never thought going through this process would be easy, but being a part of this program gives me the confidence that I will succeed as a great PA in the future.”

Anna Ernst ’21, PA-S

There is no PA program that compares to Shenandoah’s encouraging and caring atmosphere. After attending their open house I knew this program would mold me into the compassionate and hard-working PA that I have always envisioned myself to be. Their passion for helping the community and their critical thinking approach to learning medicine through modules and clinical integration is why I chose Shenandoah.”

Karen Lizarraga ’21, PA-S

When I decided to become a Physician Assistant, I knew from the start where I wanted to pursue my degree.  As an undergrad student I studied biology at Shenandoah University which showed me just how much our school cares about the students and going the extra mile to ensure that students have the best chance at success.  Once I was accepted to the PA program, here at Shenandoah, I knew I was in the best of hands. The program feels just like the same close-knit family environment that I had grown to expect based on my undergraduate experience.  As a non-traditional student and a military veteran, I have always felt more comfortable in an environment of structure, camaraderie and unified goals. I feel a strong sense of community here and everyone from faculty to students desire the same outcome which is to ensure that we get the best education to become the best trained practitioners possible for the patients in our community. Go Hornets!”

Career Possibilities

Employment of Physician Assistants is projected to grow 31% from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. Increased demand for healthcare services from the growing and aging population and widespread chronic disease, combined with a shortage of physicians, is resulting in an increased demand for Physician Assistants.

Physician Assistants (PAs) are health-care professionals who practice as part of a team with a physician. PAs exercise autonomy in decision-making and provide a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services with physician supervision. The role of the PA includes provision of primary and specialty care in medical and surgical practices located in rural, urban or suburban areas. PA practice is patient-care centered but may include education, research and administrative duties.

Classes

The program integrates graduate-level critical thinking and analysis, problem solving, scientific inquiry, self-directed learning and the effective use of modern technology for professional practice that includes elements of research, leadership, education and continued enhancement of the physician assistant profession.

Learn how to:

  • obtain medical histories, build patient relationships and perform appropriate physical examinations
  • order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic modalities
  • establish diagnoses and develop and implement appropriate, evidence-based treatment plans

Shenandoah’s program is multimodal and case-based, with small-group learning and a primary care focus. Our clinical integration cases develop and enhance the critical thinking skills you’ll need to serve real patients.

Courses are taught by experienced professionals in a collegial, compassionate learning atmosphere, and we offer an interprofessional teaching and learning environment, including courses seminar and location. The program offers clinical rotations in medically underserved communities, and hands-on experience in full-dissection cadaver anatomy. You can further enhance your learning with elective course opportunities in Care of Vulnerable Populations, Chronic Care and Communication (e.g. Medical Spanish).

Curriculum

The curriculum design, offered in didactic and experiential components, is based upon the concepts of adult-centered learning and professional education, which focus on mastery of knowledge, skills and attitudes required by the graduate to practice effectively as a physician assistant. The didactic curriculum offers multiple modalities for learning, which include self-directed study, recitation, lecture, integrated clinical cases and laboratory experiences. These modalities assist students in developing the necessary skills to be self-directed life-long learners and effectively apply what they learn in the clinical setting. The clinical curriculum provides core primary care and other learning experiences where students apply knowledge and skills in patient care settings under the supervision and mentoring by licensed health care providers.

GEL Courses Currently Offered

My favorite part of the GEL trip to Uganda was working with the teachers at Nyaka. You could tell how dedicated they are to the program and to the students they teach. I particularly enjoyed spending time with the secondary school teachers and seeing how they work to not only teach the course material but to prepare their students for life beyond Nyaka. Even though I have traveled, I have never been to a location where it is truly subsistence living. To say that it was an eye opening experience is a dramatic understatement. It makes one reconsider personal lifestyle choices. I remember coming home and one of my first thoughts was “Wow. I have so much stuff in my house. Do I really need all these things?” I had a great relationship with the professors on my trip. You get to know so much more about the faculty and you are able to develop relationships beyond the classroom on these experiences.
