Musculoskeletal assessment joint motion and muscle testing

  • Synopsis
  • About this title

Completely revised and updated, the Third Edition offers a student-friendly approach to muscle assessment, presenting the principles and methodology of assessing both joint range of motion (ROM)/goniometry and manual muscle strength for the head, neck, trunk, and extremities. Each chapter is devoted to a separate anatomical region and provides knowledge of pertinent surface anatomy and deep anatomy. Excellent photography and illustrations enhance comprehension of techniques and serve as a self-learning tool.

What is musculoskeletal assessment?

The musculoskeletal examination focuses on assessment of range of motion and evaluation of painful joints or soft tissue structures. From: Essentials of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Fourth Edition), 2020.

How do you do MMT?

Testing position - arm out from the side at shoulder level. The examiner demonstrates the motion, then states "Lift your arm out to the side to shoulder level." The hand giving resistance is contoured over the patient's arm just above the elbow. The other hand stabilizes the shoulder above the shoulder joint.

What is MMT in occupational therapy?

- Manual Muscle Testing (MMT) is a method of valuable diagnostic evaluation used by occupational therapist with establishing effective treatment and tracking progress throughout a specific regimen.

How is muscle strength measured in physiotherapy?

Manual muscle testing (MMT) is the most common way to test muscle strength. For this test, the PT pushes on the body in specific directions while you work to resist the pressure. The PT assigns a grade that reflects how well you were able to do this.
