OVERSEAS CITIZEN OF INDIA(OCI) CARD

Type of Document

A foreign national, who was eligible to become citizen of India on 26.01.1950 or was a citizen of India on or at anytime after 26.01.1950 or belonged to a territory that became part of India after 15.08.1947 is eligible for registration as Overseas Citizen of India (OCI). Minor children and spouse of such person are also eligible for OCI. However, if the applicant had ever been a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh, he/she will not be eligible for OCI.

Benefits

OCIs are entitled to a multi-purpose, multiple entry, lifelong visa allowing them to visit India at any time, for any length of time and for any purpose. They are exempted from police reporting for any length of stay in the country. They have also been granted all rights in the economic, financial and education fields in parity with NRIs except, the right to acquisition of agricultural or plantation properties.

How to Apply

  1. All Applications forOCI  may be submitted at VFS centre in The Hague (Parkstraat 99, 2514 JH The Hague, Netherlands,) or Amsterdam (Travelport Building, Radarweg 501-545, 1043 NZ Amsterdam). The submission of application in person is only possible by appointment (//services.vfsglobal.com/nld/en/ind/book-an-appointment). OCI application may also be sent by post to The Hague VFS Centre.

Note

(i) Mandatory requirement of re-issuance of an OCI card each time a new passport is issued to a foreigner upto 20 years of age and once after completing 50 years of age is dispensed with.

(ii) OCI cardholder is required to get the OCI card re-issued only

once

when a new passport is issued after completing 20 years of age.

(iii) OCI cardholder is required to upload ONLINE a copy of the new passport and a latest photo

each time

a new passport is issued upto 20 years of age and

once

after completing 50 years of age. The uploading of these documents may be done within

three months

of receipt of the new passport. The service will be provided on Gratis basis.

(iv) Foreign Spouse of an Indian Citizen or spouse of foreign origin of an OCI cardholder are required to upload a copy of the new passport and also a latest photo ONLINE each time a new passport is issued along with a declaration on subsisting of marriage, copy of the Indian passport of the Indian spouse/passport & OCI card of the OCI cardholder spouse.

The timeline for re-issuance of OCI card in r/o OCI cardholders who may be required to get their OCI card re-issued has been extended till 31 December, 2022.
(v) Embassy of India does not handle direct applications by walk-in or by post / mail.

Documents Required for OCI Card

  1. Applicant’s Original US/Foreign Passport validity of minimum 6 months at the time of submission of application.
  2. Copy of US Naturalization Certificate/Or Birth certificate if born outside of USA.
  3. Recent Passport photo taken within the past 6 months, showing current appearance. 2 inches by 2 inches’ size.
  4. Copy of Marriage Certificate (If Married)
  5. Copy of US address proof (Any ONE):
    • State Issued ID Card- Copy of your Driving License or your Residence Card, OR
    • Copy of a recent Utility Bill- Electricity, GAS or Water. Should not be more than 3 months old, OR
    • Copy of Valid/Current Annual lease agreement signed by the landlord and the tenant.
  1. Evidence/supporting documents to prove that the applicant was at one point a Citizen of India on or after 26th Jan 1947. This evidence could be ONE of following:
    • Copy of the Indian Passport, OR
    • Copy of school leaving certificate in India, OR
    • Copy of Indian Voter ID Card/PAN Card/Indian Driving license(even if expired is ok);OR
    • Copy of the  Domicile  Certificate  issued  by  the  Competent Authority; OR
    • Copy of Nativity Certificate from the competent authority; OR
    • OCI Card/ PIO card of parents/ spouse along with the base papers/ documents upon which the OCI/ PIO card was issued; OR
    • Evidence of relationship as parent/grandparent/ great grandparent, if their Indian origin is claimed as basis for  registration  as  OCI Cardholder. The document of relationship could be “Birth Certificate” issued from competent authority mentioning both parents’ name.    In case the birth certificate is issued by a foreign authority, it is to be Apostled or endorsed by the concerned Indian Mission abroad.

In case of minor child whose both parents are citizens of India or one of the parents is a citizen of India:

  1. Copy of child’s birth certificate
  2. Copy of US/Foreign passports of both the parents.
  3. Copy of Indian passport of the parents / one of the parents or copy of the Domicile Certificate or Nativity Certificate issued by the Competent Authority in respect of the parents/ one of the parents or any other proof substantiating the status of the parents/ one of the parents as being Indian citizen(s).
  4. If the parents are divorced, court order of  dissolution  of marriage, which specifically mentions that the legal custody of the child is with the parent who is applying for the OCI card.

In case you are a spouse of foreign origin, of a citizen of India, or spouse of foreign origin of an OCI Cardholder:

  1. Registered marriage certificate; and
  2. In the case of spouse of an Indian citizen – copy of the Indian Passport of the spouse or copy of the Domicile Certificate or Nativity  Certificate  issued  by  the  Competent  Authority  in respect of the Indian spouse or any other proof substantiating the status of the spouse as being an Indian citizen.
  3. In the case of spouse of an OCI Cardholder – Copy of the present valid Passport of the spouse  and  copy  of the  OCI Card of the spouse and copies of the documents upon which the OCI Card was issued to the spouse

What are the supporting documents for OCI application?

Mandatory documents for an OCI Application: Two photographs as per the photo specifications. Copy of Foreign Passport. Copy of Naturalisation Certificate, if applicable. Applicants, who have obtained Foreign Nationality by Naturalisation, are required to submit Naturalisation Certificate (Original) along with the copy.

What is Indian origin proof for OCI minor?

PROOF OF INDIAN ORIGIN – COPY Certificate of Residence or Place of Birth from First Class Magistrate/District Magistrate; • Domicile Certificate issued by the competent authority; or • Nativity Certificate from the competent authority.

Is renunciation required for OCI minor?

A: Yes, a Renunciation Certificate is compulsory before applying for an OCI card. You can apply for renunciation certificate through VFS website.
