I’m back with another recipe from TikTok, so far in my TikTok cooking journey, I’ve made cloud bread and dalgona coffee.  This time I made the olive oil cake recipe from TikTok that Kylie Jenner made Insta-Famous.  

So Kylie Jenner did not bake a cake, she received a cake and cut it strangely in her Instagram Stories. Her followers criticized her for her weird cake cutting skills, she then preceded to cut a weird circle out to goad her followers.  

Well, the whole #oliveoil cake thing then took on a whole life of its own and EVERYONE started baking olive oil cakes on TikTok!

There are tons of olive oil cake recipes out there but this is the one I’ve seen most often on TikTok and it’s super easy to make.  This olive oil cake recipe from TikTok is hard to mess up.

Does Olive Oil Cake Taste Like Olive Oil?

Olive oil cake does not taste like olive oil!  The olive oil is really there just to make the cake rich and moist.  In this recipe, it acts more like butter in a standard cake recipe.  You’ll want to use good quality extra virgin olive for this recipe or else you might just end up with an oily cake.

What Does Olive Oil Cake Taste Like?

Olive oil cake is super-rich, dense, and sweet.  Though it is a dense cake, it’s dense in the best possible melt in your mouth kind of way.  I did find it a little sweeter than I like my desserts.  My husband thought the level of sweetness was fine.

The lemon zest in this recipe gives it a nice citrus flavor.  You can use orange or lemon zest, I chose to use both.  I actually wish I had used more zest and a bit of juice too for more tartness.

Both my daughter and my husband enjoyed the cake, much more than my other TikTok baking adventures, like cloud bread.  My daughter ate her slice of cake with raspberries.  The tartness really balances out the sweetness of the olive oil cake.

Do You Need an Electric Mixer?

I would say yes!  Just like with the TikTok Cloud Bread Recipe, you need to beat the eggs.  You don’t need to beat them as much, but it’s still quite a bit.  It will be much easier with an electric hand or stand mixer.

TikTok Olive Oil Cake Recipe

Ingredients

• 4 Eggs
• 1 Cup of Sugar
• Zest of 2 Lemons or Oranges
• 1 ¾ Cup Flour
• 1 ½ tsp Baking Powder
• 7 Tbs Melted Butter
• ¾ Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
• 3 Tbs Milk

Equipment 

• Electric Mixer

Instructions

First, sift together your flour and baking powder.

Next whisk together the melted butter, milk, and olive oil.

Now combine your eggs, sugar, and zest and beat with your electric mixer until the mixture is light and creamy about 3 to 5  minutes with an electric hand mixer.

It should look like the picture below when it’s light and creamy.

Now add in some of your flour mixture to your egg mixture and beat together until incorporated.  Then add some of your olive oil mixture into your egg and beat until incorporated.  Keep adding the flour and olive oil mixtures into the eggs a little at a time and alternating while beating until they are all gone.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.  Butter, flour, and line a 10” round cake pan with parchment paper.  Pour your batter into the pan.  I had only an 8-inch cake pan so I poured the extra batter into a small ramekin and make a mini cake.  

Bake in the oven for 30 to 35 minutes.  Let cool and dust with powdered sugar and garnish with a sprig of rosemary to make your olive oil cake look just like Kylie’s!  And yes I cut mine all weird too just for the pictures.  Though my daughter wanted to eat the little circle I cut out!

Olive Oil Cake Recipe from TikTok made Insta Famous by Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian

Prep Time 15 mins

Cook Time 35 mins

• Electric Hand or Stand Mixer

• 4 Eggs
• 1 Cup Sugar
• Zest of 2 Lemons or Oranges
• 1 3/4 Cups Flour
• 1 1/2 Tsp Baking Powder
• 3/4 Cup Olive Oil
• 7 Tbs Melted Butter
• 3 Tbs Milk
• Powdered Sugar Optional
• Rosemary Sprig Optional

• Sift together the flour and baking powder in a bowl

  

• Whisk together olive oil, melted butter, and milk

  

• Combine eggs, sugar, and zest in a bowl

  

• Beat eggs, sugar, and zest with an electric mixer until light yellow and creamy, about 3-5 minutes

  

• Alternate adding the olive oil mixture and the flour mixture into the eggs a scoop at a time and all incorporated

  

• Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit

• Butter a 10 inch cake pan, dust with flour, and line with parchment paper on the bottom

• Pour batter into the pan and bake for 30 to 35 minutes

  

• Let cool, then dust with powdered sugar and garnish with a sprig of rosemary.
