As a smart home nerd and a person who takes pride in having good quality smart home security system installed in my home, I decided to give the Schlage Lock a try.

I also installed the Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter for my convenience, which lets you lock and unlock your smart Deadbolt from anywhere using any smartphone, iPhone, or iPad.

The device worked without a hitch for a long time. However, one fine day, it stopped working. I got a bit worried because it could potentially compromise my security.

I started researching why this happened, how to troubleshoot the WiFi adapter, and the steps I can take to avoid a similar experience in the future.

To troubleshoot the Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter,

  • Check if the adapter is correctly connected to your WiFi network and placed close to your router.
  • Ensure that your network’s bandwidth is 2.4 GHz and that your mobile data is switched off.
  • Reset your adapter by pressing and holding the reset button on the device for 10 seconds.

Let’s look at the various methods in which you can troubleshoot the Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter and the process of resetting your adapter in an easy-to-understand fashion in detail.

Adapter Won’t Pair With WiFi

If you ask me about the one complaint that I saw raised in most forum discussions, it is the adapter failing to connect to your WiFi network.

The most probable reasons as to why this happens are:

  • Network Bandwidth: Make sure that your WiFi network has a bandwidth of 2.4 GHz and not 5 GHz. In the case of the latter, the adapter will fail to connect.
  • Discoverability: Sometimes, the adapter might connect to your mobile data because it is the most convenient network for the adapter to connect to. In this case, switch off your mobile data so that the adapter can discover your WiFi network.
  • Signal Strength: Your adapter may fail to connect to the lock when it fails to find any stable connection nearby. Try shifting your WiFi router towards the adapter to resolve this issue.

The Adapter Is Acting Up Or Not Working Properly

Sometimes, much to your dismay, it may happen that your Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter is not responding to your commands.

In such a scenario, the best alternative would be to reset your adapter and ensure that your device is set up correctly.

Before that, let’s see the steps to set up your adapter correctly:

Setting Up Your Device On A Smartphone

  • Navigate to the menu in the application. After this, select ‘WiFi Adapters.’
  • Select the Plus (+) sign, which can be seen in the top right corner.
  • Now, you should find out the programming code for the adapter. This is usually provided on the backside of the device. Once you do this, you will have to type in this code whenever it is prompted.
  • After this is done, connect your WiFi adapter to the power source. Ensure that the adapter is not more than forty feet away from your Schlage Lock.

These steps are common for both iOS and Android devices. However, from this point, the steps will differ a bit for the devices’ setting up.

For iOS

  • Join the adapter’s temporary network.
  • Now, connect it to your WiFi network with the help of the Schlage Sense Application.
  • The application will now connect to the Schlage Lock, thus pairing your adapter with your Schlage Lock.

For Android

  • Select your adapter on the ‘Add WiFi Adapter’ screen.
  • Now select your WiFi network.
  • Now, enter the programming code, which is the code that you saw at the beginning of this process.
  • Once done, your adapter would have paired to your Schlage Lock.

Reset Your WiFi Adapter

My Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter started working in its full once it was reset. It is also preferable to reset your device in situations where your adapter accidentally pairs up with an Apple HomeKit setup.

Since the Schlage Sense Adapter is not designed to work with HomeKit, you must perform a factory reset and repair your lock.

To reset the Schlage lock back to its factory settings, you can follow these steps.

  • Disconnect the battery connection.
  • Press and hold the button on the adapter for ten seconds. While holding the button, reconnect the battery connection.
  • Now, complete the process by pressing the reset button and then keying in the four-digit user code that you obtain when you buy the lock.

Conclusion
