Truma combi eco hydronic furnace and water heating system

What is the Truma Combi Eco?

The Truma Combi eco is the North American version of the Truma Combi 4 available for the last 20 years in Europe. This latest generation combination furnace and boiler is tried and tested in the harshest of environments.

The Truma Combi will allow you to enjoy the sounds of mother nature with its exceptionally quiet furnace. Many ask, "is it even on?" only to place their hand in front of a vent to feel the hot air. This reason, along with its exceptional fuel economy puts the Truma Combi well ahead of the pack and is the reason most RV manufacturers have moved to Truma systems in North America like their European Cousins did decades ago.

Why a Combination furnace and water heater?

Space is almost always a premium in RV and camping trailers. By combining both a water heater and furnace into one unit you halved the amount of space required for installation and supporting ducting, etc. Since the Truma Combi has a 10L (2.64 Gallon) stainless steel water jacket, anytime you use your furnace, hot water is a bi-product. Does this mean hot air is a bi-product of heating water in the summer? No. the Truma Combi has a separate circulation fan for the exhaust and can produce hot water without heating any air. The opposite is also true, the Truma Combi does not need water in its water jacket to heat the air. You can be fully winterized with no water in the system and still have the comfort of a furnace.

Why Propane? Why not Diesel?

Propane is by far the cleanest fuel for use in RV's outside of electricity. The availability of Propane in North America is extensive and is the most common fuel in traditional RV for water heating, furnace use and generators. There is a reason for this, it's maintenance free. RV's see a lot of infrequent use. When you are ready to take the family out, you want your furnace to start up and run when called upon. Propane also has the lowest boiling point out of the available fuels, meaning the combustion is going to be quieter, more proportional and is not affected by altitude or propane quality issues.

Diesel is very dirty and not nearly as efficient. Most Webasto or Espar heaters require yearly removal and cleaning of carbon and soot build up. Typically these units (genuine offerings) offer no cost savings over a Truma Combi and can not heat your water, so you require an additional appliance. There are no diesel combination furnace/boilers systems certified to use for the North American market.

You get what you pay for..

The old adage is true, you get what you pay for. Quality furnaces have low failure rates and no maintenance requirements. The Truma is a quality product made in Germany. High quality parts combined with appropriate materials (stainless steel, high quality castings, temperature resistant plastics), robust electronics, and safety sensors all translate to a much higher cost to manufacturer.

Now featured in the 2016 Winnebago Travato 59K is the Truma Combi furnace and water heater!

Truma launched North America’s first forced air LP gas furnace with integrated water heating function, the Truma Combi™. Thanks to its compact dimensions, energy-efficient technology and quiet operation, the Truma Combi™ has been the best-selling RV furnace in Europe and Australia for more than 20 years.

High energy efficiency
The Truma Combi™ boasts an excellent energy efficiency of approximately 90%. This means that the energy stored in propane is converted into heat virtually without loss. “This results in very low LP gas and electricity consumption for the furnace and boiler”, explains Gerhard Hundsberger, CEO of Truma Corp, “making the Truma Combi™ a product that is environmentally-friendly and easy on your wallet.”

Strong performance
The Truma Combi™ is available in four models: the eco and comfort version operate on propane and rated at 14,300 and 20,400 BTU/h thermal output respectively. The eco plus and comfort plus models include an electric option with three operating possibilities of: propane, electricity or both propane and electricity. The “plus” models are equipped with 1,700 W electrical heating elements at 120 VAC. In all modes, the furnace operates extremely quietly and maintains a constant, comfortable room temperature without variations. Three microprocessors provide intelligent temperature control in the device and ensure maximum safety. One processor controls performance while the other two monitor safety.

Optimum warm air distribution
The Truma Combi™ is very compact and, at 35.1 lbs, the most light-weight heating system on the market. The remote cowl-kit requires a minimal wall cut-out diameter of 3.27” and provides flexibility in installation at different locations of the vehicle such as small storage spaces, closets, beneath beds or benches. Four air outlets on the heater and a special insulated duct system ensure optimal and uniform warm air distribution throughout the vehicle.

Easy-to-use digital control panel
The digital LCD control panel “Truma CP plus” offers great operating ease and ensures a pleasant climate in the vehicle. The near silent, variable speed fan can be set between four operating modes: “Eco”, “High”, “Boost” and the fan only “Vent” mode. The boost function heats up the RV 15% quicker ensuring a pleasant room climate in no time. A “Boost” function is also available for the boiler, providing longer showers with shorter waiting times. Additionally, all functions can be set easily and conveniently thanks to a programmable timer. For instance, it is possible to program a lower room temperature at night or activate the hot water “Boost” function an hour before you wake.

How long does a Truma Combi take to heat water?

A powerful gas burner heats the water in about 45 minutes. If you want hot water faster than this, you need a boiler with an additional electric heating element. This reduces the heating time to about 30 minutes.

How much does a Truma Combi cost?

Are there any cons associated with the Truma Combi? Just two. As you'd expect for a high-tech item, the Truma Combi Eco Plus costs more than your typical American furnace and water heater with an $1,800 cost.

How does the Truma heating system work?

The appliance reduces the heat output before the desired heating and water temperatures are reached. When the set temperature is reached, the burner switches off. When the temperature falls below the set heater and water temperatures, the Truma Combi switches on again automatically to heat air and water (winter mode).

Can you run Truma Combi without water?

Can I also heat the living area with my Truma Combi heater if it is not filled with water? Yes. The Combi heater may be used in pure heating mode even with an empty water container.
