Cobra 4 channel wireless surveillance system with 2 cameras reviews

TL;DR: This is a decent system, the design is aging rapidly for the cost. Needs some improvements to really be competitive in today's market. Security systems keep getting cheaper, making this a bit overpriced for the feature set. However, this is a great system if you don't want cloud-based storage, or a subscription.

System teardown/analysis here:

This appears to be a re-brand of the Lorex model LW2752, without the internal battery. The Lorex model was recalled due to battery issues a few years ago, so it's probably good this unit doesn't have it. The manual for the Lorex unit has much more detail about how the system works, I recommend reading it for more understanding of how the system works. There are other similar systems by Uniden (UDR777HD) and CasaCam (VS1002), with similar features at various price points. Other systems include a touch screen, which is nice, but more prone to failure. The big software feature missing in this system is masking of image areas to not detect motion - other systems have this. Some of the newer systems include a floodlight on the camera that can be motion-controlled, or manually controlled. The apps provided for the other systems will work with this one, but for the most part they are clones of the MyCamView app (Android). Getting the most out of this system will require some tweaking when you set it up. The mounting bracket can be loosened in three areas - two thumbscrews and an adjustment where the camera bracket threads into the mount. for adjustment of rotation and angle. Using the app to view the camera image while adjusting it (or having a helper) is the best way to get the desired camera view. Don't forget to snug up the thumbscrews to maintain that position! You can set it up to record based on motion, or record 24/7. You can set it to overwrite when the SD card is full, or stop recording and show a notification on the receiver (not the app). You can set the following recording length when motion is detected: 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds

The good: No subscription, pay once and done All your data is stored locally on the SD card, not cloud-based (caveat below about server locations for app communication) Works with or without internet (limited features without internet) Simple to setup and add cameras Decent menu options and adjustability Hardware decent, if not super rugged. The recordings created (should) include five seconds of pre-trigger, so you can see what was happening just prior to motion being detected.

The OK: The app is buggy and slow, but usable. There are false positives (wind blowing, etc.) - this is to be expected. App only allows intercom, live view, and recorded videos with no playback controls. (and no audio). You cannot adjust settings in the app. There is NO official way to access the device on a PC - only a smartphone. I use an Android emulator BlueStacks on my PC to run the app, but it's not reliable (emulator works about half the time).

The bad: "HD" mode suffers from really low framerate, and reduced FOV. Night vision is really poor - like REALLY poor. It is black and white, and anything more than 10 feet away is hard to distinguish. You can tell there's a person or a car, but not who or what model. Daytime is much better. There are false NEGATIVES (motion is NOT detected when it should be, even in high sensitivity mode). This is critical for a security system. Cameras occasionally glitch out, and recording is stopped. Usually this is only for a few seconds, then it recovers. This is NOT with the cameras far away either, they are well within range and show full strength. Power loss results in resetting the date - this can be resolved by using automatic time via network settings, but still, a capacitor to maintain the clock for brief power outages would be great. No image masking - other systems with the same innards can do this, there's no reason it shouldn't be added in a firmware update. Sometimes the pre-trigger is not included in the recording. This means, for example, that a car traveling by at 20 mph may trigger a recording, yet never be visible in the recording. It seems that once the pre-trigger stops working, it will continue to be skipped until the receiver is rebooted. The camera communicates with the app through servers located in China, which makes me a little uncomfortable. I disconnect the ethernet cable unless I plan to be away and want remote viewing.

This design is getting a bit long in the tooth, and they should really revamp it with some additional features. Other systems have: a visible spotlight on the camera that can be automatic or manually controlled, masking of areas for motion detection, and touchscreen interface, and/or a battery. Also, a local web server for PC viewing is a must.

For the price though, it is still a decent system for basic home/office security.

The industry continues to grow every day and it is very important to have an extraordinary security system. Apart from industry, security system for a home should be exceptional. There are lots of options and it is not easy to choose the right one for you.
