How to make my phone go straight to voicemail

The quickest method to contact somebody is to simply give them a call. All you need to do is dial the number of the person you want to call.

But there’s a frequent issue related to phone calls that’s affecting many Android users. Namely, the call goes straight into the voicemail.

1. Check your call settings

If one of the following call settings is enabled, don’t be surprised if your incoming calls land directly into your voicemail:

  • Call rejection or block
  • Call barring
  • Forward to voicemail

Obviously, to fix the issue, you need to disable these settings.

  1. Open the Phone app and click on the three-dot menu
  2. Go to Settings and tap Auto Reject List
  3. Remove the numbers you don’t really on the list
  4. Go back to Settings and click on the More button
  5. Select Call barring and disable all call barring settings

  6. Return once again to Settings and tap Call forwarding
  7. Select Voice call, and then Always forward
  8. Disable call forwarding

  9. Reboot your phone and check of the problem is gone.

If this issue is affecting a limited number of contacts, check the settings for each contact. Maybe the option to route incoming calls to voicemail is enabled for specific contacts.

Google Pixel phones

Pixel phones have a dedicated Google Voice Do Not Disturb (DND) mode that sends call to voicemail.

The feature is only available on Voice for G Suite accounts. Basically, all the calls received outside your working or office hours are routed straight to the voicemail.

Launch the Voice app, tap Menu, select Settings and then Do not disturb. Tap Calendar and check your working hour settings.

2. Disable Bluetooth

As surprising as this may seem, your Bluetooth could be the cause why your calls are landing straight into voicemail. Try disabling your Bluetooth connection and check if the problem persists.

The quickest way to turn off your Bluetooth is to use the two-finger gesture and swipe down from the top of your phone’s screen. Tap the Bluetooth icon to turn the feature off.

3. Ensure DND isn’t Enabled

If your phone has a “Do not disturb” feature, make sure that it isn’t enabled. Some phones have a DND scheduling feature that automatically puts the phone in “Do not disturb” mode. There is also a mode where calls are sent to voice mail when the phone is placed face down on a surface.

4. Re-insert your SIM card

Sometimes, taking your SIM card out and re-inserting it is the equivalent of a tried-and-tested reboot on PC.

Power your phone down and take out the SIM card. Insert it back and power up your phone. Wait one minute or two until the name or your carrier appears on the screen.

If you experience any service issues, have your carrier inspect your SIM. Maybe you need to replace it with a new one. Trying a new SIM may clear out the problem.

Don’t forget to check your network coverage with your carrier. The voicemail problem could be the result of network coverage issues that your carrier may be aware of.

5. Check Wireless Carrier Settings

Ensure that your wireless carrier doesn’t have any type of call protection enabled. Features like AT&T’s “Call Protect” can block calls from numbers you may not want blocked.

There are many circumstances under which you wouldn't want to answer a phone call. Whether you are in an important meeting or a quiet theater or simply don't wish to talk to a particular individual, you can send a call to voice mail. The person calling will have the option to leave a message, and you won't have to speak with him directly. You can make a phone call go straight to voice mail if you set your cell phone to do so beforehand. If the person is already calling, you can send him to voice mail, though he will hear a ring or two on his end first.

Step 1

Turn off your cell phone. If your phone is powered off, all calls will be sent directly to voice mail. With most cell-phone carriers, the caller does not hear any rings prior to voice mail picking up.

Step 2

Hit the "decline" button when someone calls. Most cell phones feature a "decline" or "ignore" button next to the "answer" or "connect" button. On some phones, this button may read "clear" or "end." When you hit this button, the caller is sent directly to your voice mail. Neither you nor the caller hears any additional rings.

Step 3

Reduce the volume on your cell phone. If you are receiving a call, you can stop your phone from audibly ringing by pressing the "volume down" button. You won't hear any further rings, and the caller will be sent to voice mail. The caller will continue to hear the specified number of rings prior to your voice mail picking up the call.

Step 4

Forward your calls directly to your voice mail. Call forwarding is an added service you can get from your provider. When you forward calls, callers are sent directly to your voice mail. Generally, neither party hears any rings. Call forwarding instructions vary from carrier to carrier. Be aware that forwarding calls incurs additional charges on your monthly bill.

Step 5

Use a direct-to-voice mail calling service if you wish to reach someone's voice mail directly. Services like Slydial bypass rings and send you straight to an individual's voice mailbox. You must first dial the service's phone number, then enter the phone number you wish to reach. You'll then be sent directly to the person's voice mail. The service is free, though you are required to listen to an advertisement before you are put through to the voice mail.

Tip

You cannot forward a call while it is in progress.

Warning

Many people know when you are sending them to your voice mail, particularly if they call you often. They may have learned the number of rings that normally occur prior to your voice mail answering. If you send them to voice mail before the standard number of rings have occurred, they will likely know that you have done so.
