Nfl draft pick salaries 3rd round 2022

After paychecks for the NFL’s 2021 draft class shrank because of the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the league’s bottom line, the players picked in the 2022 draft’s first round are getting a big boost in compensation.

No. 1 selection Travon Walker from Georgia can expect to sign a rookie contract worth around $41.465 million with the Jacksonville Jaguars. That’s about $6.7 million more than Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s contract as the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Players drafted in the first round receive four-year contracts that carry a team option for a fifth season.

The values of those contracts are based on the NFL’s salary cap of $208.2 million for the 2022 season and this year’s rookie compensation pool in a formula spelled out in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and its players association. That makes it possible to estimate the money allotted to each draft slot (and the sports financial web site spotrac.com has done so).

Last year, the salary cap for each team was $182.5 million – a pandemic-induced decline from $198.2 million in 2020.

Lawrence also signed a contract with the Jaguars that was worth about $2.42 million less than the rookie deal that Joe Burrow, the 2020 No. 1 choice, signed with the Cincinnati Bengals.

The 2022 bump in pay extends throughout the draft. The final pick in last year’s first round, Washington linebacker Joe Tryon, signed a $10.706 million contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Georgia safety Lewis Cine, this year’s No. 32 pick, will sign for about $12.425 million.

The values of the contracts lessen as the draft goes on, of course, but they don’t decline at a standard rate. In the first round, the biggest difference between contract values is from the fifth to the sixth pick. The fifth player picked on Thursday night – Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux -- will get a contract that’s worth about $4.232 million more than that of the sixth player picked – North Carolina State offensive tackle Ikem Ekwonu. That’s a difference of around $1.058 million per year over the life of the contract.

Alabama offensive tackle Evan Neal went to the New York Giants with the seventh selection. He’s in line for a $24.551 million contract that will include a signing bonus of $15.035 million.

Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams went to the Detroit Lions with the 12th selection. He’ll sign a contract worth about $17.462 million, including a $9.879 million signing bonus.
