Shampoo makes my hair dry and frizzy

When your hair feels like straw, it’s usually due to a lack of moisture. Treatment typically depends on what’s causing the lack of moisture in your hair.

In this article, we’ll review the common causes of dry, brittle hair, and what you can do to fix the problem.

Straw-like hair is often the result of common hair care oversights, such as these:

  • using drying and styling tools (dryers, curling irons, electric rollers, flat irons) at too high a heat setting
  • using heat-based drying and styling tools too frequently
  • shampooing too often
  • using a shampoo with harsh ingredients, such as sulfates, that are drying for your type of hair
  • not using a conditioner often enough or one that’s designed for your type of hair
  • not including a moisturizing hair mask in your hair care routine
  • not being gentle enough when you detangle wet hair
  • not eating a diet that has enough of the vitamins and minerals necessary to support hair health
  • having your hair dyed or touched up too frequently
  • not having your hair trimmed often enough, resulting in split ends
  • not protecting your hair from the sun with a hat or using product that protects against UV rays
  • exposing your hair to certain environments, such as a hot, dry climate or the cold, dry air that can occur with a change of seasons
  • overexposing your hair to chemicals, such as by spending a lot of time in a swimming pool

Dry and brittle hair could be an indication of a medical issue, such as:

  • Hypothyroidism: When your thyroid gland isn’t producing enough thyroid hormone, one of the first symptoms can be dry and brittle hair.
  • Hypoparathyroidism: When your body doesn’t produce enough parathyroid hormone, you might have a calcium deficiency, resulting in dry and brittle hair.
  • An eating disorder: Many eating disorders result in malnutrition, which can lead to dry and brittle hair.

The first step in repairing straw-like hair is to address your hair care routine. Consider adjusting your behavior and the products you’re using. For example:

  • try lowering the heat setting on your hair drying and styling tools and using them less frequently
  • select a shampoo that’s appropriate for your hair type and reduce your shampooing frequency
  • choose a conditioner that’s appropriate for your hair type and use it often
  • protect your hair from the sun’s UV rays and other environmental factors by wearing a hat, scarf, or other head covering
  • adjust your diet to include nutritional foods that support healthy hair

If you don’t see results from lifestyle and product changes, make an appointment to see a primary care doctor or dermatologist. They may have other suggestions regarding your hair care. They might also test for underlying medical conditions.

If your hair feels like straw, it’s most likely a problem with moisture. This can typically be repaired by changing your usual hair products and your hair care routine.

If product and lifestyle changes don’t fix the problem, see your doctor or dermatologist. They may test for potential medical conditions such as hypothyroidism or hyperparathyroidism.

Understanding Frizz

It’s firstly important to understand why your hair gets frizzy in the first place. Often it’s because your hair has become dried out and lacking in moisture

When your hair is dry it reaches for the nearest source of moisture, and that’s usually in the atmosphere. When your hair finds it’s moisture from the atmosphere around it, the result is frizzy hair!

To avoid frizz you need to make sure your hair is well moisturised so it doesn’t have to search for moisture elsewhere! If your hair has enough moisture it won’t become flyway and frizzy

9 Ways to Add Moisture to Your Hair

1. Use a Moisturising Shampoo

Firstly it is important that you use a moisturising shampoo that contains humectants like glycerin. Humectants add moisture to the hair by helping the hair hold onto more water.

The hydrating anti frizz shampoo that I recommend you try is the Sachajuan Moisturising Shampoo. It is extremely hydrating and lists glycerin as one of its highest ingredients.

This shampoo is also enriched with Scandinavian marine extracts which strengthen and replenish fragile hair strands. Your hair will be left moisturised, silky smooth and less likely to become frizzy after washing!

Simply apply the shampoo to soaking wet hair, massage into your hair and scalp and then rinse.

It has an anti-static formula which leaves your hair shiny, smooth and strong. Philip Kingsley is widely considered one of the world’s leading experts on hair care!

3. Use Masks on Your Hair Once a Week

Once a week use a moisturising hair mask that contains oil or humectants. Look for ingredients like argan oil, extra virgin coconut oil, olive oil or sweet almond oil. Hyaluronic acid is also a great hydrating ingredient that can be found in some hair care treatments.

I recommend the L’Oreal Elvive Hydra Hyaluronic Acid mask. Using this hair mask once a week will ensure your hair retains its natural moisture and reduce the likelihood of frizz after washing.

4. Invest in a Silk Pillow Case

Sleeping on a silk pillowcase can help retain your hair’s natural moisture thus eliminating frizz after washing.

The natural properties of silk also help to reduce friction on your hair which causes damage, like spilt ends.  Silk fibres also don’t strip your hair of essential oils.

You might be surprised at the difference changing your pillowcase can have on your hair quality. If you are looking at how to stop frizzy hair after washing you would do well to make sure you are first using a good pillowcase!

A silk pillow case also has multi benefits as it also helps to revitalize skin and leave a healthy glow.

5. Lock in Moisture with Leave in Treatments

The best way to stop frizz after washing is to lock in moisture straight away with a leave in treatment.

Make sure you look for products which contain oils and silicons, as these build a barrier on the hair, and help to keep the moisture in the air from getting under the hair cuticle.

I recommend the Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen/Grow and Restore Leave in Conditioner. It has become a best seller on Amazon for its effectiveness in reducing frizz and breakage. It contains Jamaican black castor oil which coats the hair and prevents moisture loss.

6. Always Use a Heat Protectant Before Styling

Ideally you should minimise the use of hot styling tools on your hair, but if you are going to use them make sure you use a heat protectant first!

Frizzy hair is often a result of damage caused by styling, so try to minimise that as much as possible.

When looking for ways on how to stop frizz after washing, it’s important to consider how you look after your hair in general. I would advise investing in a good heat protectant such as the Kerastase Discipline Fluidissime Spray.

It will give you heat protection up to 450°F/ 232°C. It also provides 72 hours of frizz protection as well as giving your hair added shine.

7. Use a Hair Diffuser

Normal hair dryers will blow your hair around causing friction and frizz. Adding a hair diffuser to the front of your hair dryer will stop this from happening and allow your hair to dry without being frayed and blown around.

Diffusers also add volume and bounce to your hair. Once your hair is dry you can style as desired.

9. Invest in a Mason Pearson Hairbrush

Although they are expensive my Mason Pearson hairbrush is the best hairbrush I have ever owned. Also once you buy one it will last for life as they are so well made.

It’s the ideal tool for maintaining glossy, healthy hair and leaves your hair shiny, smooth and silky soft.

These brushes are highly effective at moving your natural scalp oils from your roots to your tips. This is why they make your hair look glossier and healthier with less flyaway and frizz.

The particular brush you buy will depend on your hair type. Different hair types require different combinations of bristles and nylon.

I bought pure bristles since I have thinner hair but you may wish to choose the mixture of nylon and bristles.
