How to change the oil in a Toyota Yaris yourself

What you’ll need

  • Oil filter (will need to fit your specific year)

  • Oil filter wrench

  • Funnel

  • Car jack

  • Wheel chocks

  • Ratchet wrench

  • Drain pan

  • Rags

1. Warm up the engine

Turn your car on and allow the engine to idle until it reaches normal operating temperatures. This will take a few minutes, but it helps to loosen the oil before changing it. Be sure to turn the engine off when you’re ready to begin!

2. Secure the car

After lifting the car with your jack on level ground, use wheel chocks and

jack stands

to secure it in place. Double-check all safety devices before getting beneath your vehicle!

3. Drain the old oil

Remove the oil fill cap from under the hood and position your drain pan below the drain plug. When you’re ready for the messy part, use the ratchet wrench to remove the drain plug.

It will take at least 15 minutes for the engine to fully drain. Use this time to either clean up any spilled oil or take a much-needed break.

4. Remove the filter

When the engine is finished draining, use the oil filter wrench to remove the old filter. Dump the leftover oil into the drain pan.

5. Install the new oil filter

Use a rag to clean off the area where the new oil filter will attach—this will help ensure a leak-free seal. Afterward, add new oil to the replacement filter before installing it with the oil filter wrench.

Don’t over-tighten the new oil filter! Damage to the threading could cause leaks and require an expensive repair.

Lastly, reattach the drain plug to finish off the work underneath your vehicle.

6. Put new oil in the engine

With the help of the funnel, pour the remainder of the SAE 5W-30 oil into the engine. Replace the fill cap and restart your engine. While the engine idles and works the new oil through its system, take this opportunity to look for leaks.

7. Stop the engine and check the oil level

Once you’re confident that everything is properly sealed, turn your engine off and allow it to cool for a few minutes. When you’re ready, use the dipstick to check the oil level. Use any remaining oil to top off the engine if the level is too low.

8. Remove the jack

When the oil level is right, close your hood. Remove the jack stands and wheel chocks from your vehicle. Carefully lower the vehicle with the jack.

Throughout the next few weeks, take the time to check your vehicle’s oil level. Sometimes driving can reveal leaks you had not noticed before.

What happens if you don’t change the oil on a Toyota Yaris?

Oil changes can seem like an inconvenience when your car is running fine. However, neglecting to change the oil on time will put your vehicle’s engine at risk of corrosion, overheating, and mechanical failure.

To spare yourself the headache and expensive repair bill, establish a regular oil change schedule. The best way to fix a problem is to never let it become one in the first place!

How to save money on car insurance

Performing an at-home oil change can save you money, but switching your car insurance can save you even more.
