Hello everyone! I am new to the world of scooters and looking to get my first one. I was kind of curious about how long scooters are expected to last with proper maintenance. I noticed on a Honda metropolitan the odometer had 4 digit holders. Do scooter engines typically die by 10,000 miles?

The useful engine life of a 50cc , air cooled scooter before it requires a rebuild is probably not much more than 10k miles.

A water cooled scooter like the Vespa GTS/ or 300 series should last 50,000 miles or more if maintained properly. There are several posters on this site that have attained that mileage or close to it. An air cooled scooter engine will probably not last as long as the water cooled models but a quality, 150cc air cooled motor should last much more than the smaller, 50cc models.

I know UFO on the MP3 forum had 75,000 on his MP2 250 and he was mad at himself for not maintaining it better, if I remember right. If you change the oil as required, keep the air filter clean and adjust the valves, I bet you can get 100,000 out of one.

I had a GS150 from 1961 to 1973, and covered 120,000 miles on it.

I did 100,000 miles on my next scooter, a Rally180 (later converted to a 200).

I am sure a properly looked-after PX would be capable of much more.
The only limiting factor is the easy availability of spares.

My 2003 ET2 lasted 8 years 11,000 before is suffered a tragic death from a cracked cylinder head and a shot oil pump. I traded it in for a GTS300 Super. The dealer has since rebuilt it and is ready to sell it.

I would also agree that 75000 to 100,000 is about right if properly maintained.

I think the theory is sort of all other things being equal smaller engines die sooner, bigger engines go longer. But in automotive / motorcycle mechanics, all things are seldom equal.

Some people jump for joy if their little 50cc makes it to 12,000m, yet some have gotten 30,000 miles plus from their little 50cc. Even two strokes.

Here is a 50cc Kymco with 45,000 miles on it, another poster down below says he knows someone with over 30,000 on his, and yet another guy on this forum had just the same.

http://www.kymcoforum.com/index.php?topic=3599.0

While not exactly exceptions, these aren't exactly the rule, either. A number of factors can play a part in engine longevity. Yet other scooters just like these go kaput much sooner.

Bonegirl's Genuine Buddy went 40,000 miles plus and was still going when the company gave her a new one, and rumor has it someone down south has one with nearly 60,000 miles on it

http://www.localriders.com/forums/showthread.php?s=00a3663bd16dc475c571e8b8a8bbf4dd&t=15002

And I know some 250's and larger are at 50,000 miles and still going strong. Also remember its not just the engine, but if going the long haul the frame, electrical, various components, and all the rest has to stand the test of use and time. No use having the engine go 50,000 miles if the rest of the bike is falling apart. So best to get a good, decent scooter like a Vespa or other quality make right off the bat.

Many times an engine only needs a "top half" rebuild to be good again. Very inexpensive to do on a smaller engined scooter, and many do it themselves and roll along great for tens of thousands more miles and smiles

I have 20,000 on my LX150 and it still runs like a champ! Haven't had to do anything other than the usual routine maintenance on the engine (fluid changes, belt and roller change every 8K miles or so, etc.)

I am closing fast on 37,000 miles on my 2008 S150. This is the Leader carburated model and I have been sticky about keeping those oil changes, valve adjustments, and other scheduled items taken care of. It's an air cooled 150cc and feels like it is still running great. A compression test is going to be done soon just to see how it is holding.

Maintainance is the key, well and as always a bit of good luck.

I think it's also good for TS to understand scooter maintenance a little, too. Since it was mentioned.

A Honda 'Met was mentioned in the first post. Often times with small scooters like that an engine may last oh, 15,000m let's say. Just for example. This could be one year of riding, two or three. Maybe five? Depending how much a person rides. But obviously you ride and enjoy your scooter.

But at 15,000 miles, dead. If it needs engine work (top half rebuild or otherwise) many consider that "routine maintenance" for a scooter. That's why it's so important the rest of the scooter is solid. If you want to keep the scooter or sell it for any good amount, you just get the work done. It doesn't mean it's not a good scooter, it just means things wear down and out sometimes. But it's cheap and simple to fix, and some even use this time to make upgrades, install big bore kits, all of that stuff. And as I said before, keep riding along.

Overall it's important to look at the total scooter, I think. Is it solid overall? Will it have so many other problems when it does need some engine work I won't feel it's worth fixing? Will I fix the engine only for the electrical system to go screwy?

So it comes down to the total ownership experience, I believe. Scooters will not travel nearly as many miles as cars without trouble, and if used a lot maintenance is a lot more frequent and can be costly for those who don't do any for themselves (a good idea I may add. if a person owns a scooter, knowing how to do some maintenance yourself is important for more reasons then cost imo). So understand that, too.

"Get what you pay for" is the most you can hope for, and hope for the best. Some brands give you a better shot then others, but one guy's Vespa LX150 might go 35,000 miles without needing major engine work, and another guy might go 50,000 miles. But that's a lot of miles on a 150cc scooter, and if it's been a good scooter I bet both guys are smiling nonetheless, as they have certainly gotten their monies worth

vespa longevity

I love the concept of a single cylinder power plant like the one in my BV350 motivating the bike for upwards of 75,000 miles. Something about the simplicity of that one lung, coming back to stable idle after a long highway jaunt. Doing more with less... That minimalism is a big part of how I ended up scootering following a lifetime of riding the biggest, heaviest and fastest motorcycles. I'm open minded, equally appreciative of Harleys, sportbikes from all countries, cruisers... I love 'em all. But my Piaggio scooter has got to be the most practical, fun and capable ride of all. One metric for example, My HD 1550 Twin Cam motor (in a Springer Softail Classic) brought that bike to about 100 mph.
My BV350 tops out about the same, albeit on a fifth of the displacement. The sheer sensibility of this lightweight, efficient modern automatic motorcycle is compelling. While I still appreciate all sorts of motorcycles, if i am restricted to a single unit, I'll stand by my scooter. Of course, I may toggle over with change in a year or two, and find myself picking up a quart of milk on the big BMW tourer... But for now, you'll see me pulling out of the bakery, with a long French bread sticking out of the grocery bag on the Piaggio's bag hook.

It's the butt time. I think the question is will your butt last 10,000 miles on a 50cc scooter?

Anything taken care of will last and last. It really boils down to the attitude of the owner......

If you get bored with your ride it won't last.....if it doesn't hold your interest....

I have a 1974 100cc kawasaki with 2002 miles and original tires, sitting in my shed because some previous owners lost interest in figuring out a problem.

I am geeked about getting it running correctly and putting some miles on.

Just go "all in" ...... Now people will call you crazy but that's why we are here.

Everything about engine life comes down to how you use it. If you flog on a cold motor, run WFO all day or think that you should yank the throttle open every time the light turns green the engine is toast. The other thing is engines talk to you. If you listen to them you'll know when they're happy and screaming an Aria is not happy.

Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: But it ain't all buttons and charts, little albatross. You know what the first rule of flying is? Well, I suppose you do, since you already know what I'm about to say.

River Tam: I do. But I like to hear you say it.

Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: Love. You can learn all the math in the 'Verse, but you take a boat in the air that you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurtin' 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

River Tam: Storm's getting worse.

Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: We'll pass through it soon enough.

Love your scoot, it'll take you where you want to go.

I think the 10K mile engine limit for a 50cc scooter is way too unfair.

I have a two stroke 50cc (peugeot looxor 50cc) which is nine years old and has more than 18K miles. I constantly overload it (riding me and my wife to work and back home) and all it has ever required is regular maintenance, yearly. I am on my third set of tyres (they don't last more than 3-4 years) and recently i had the carburetor cleaned (after 8 years of almost daily service) and i did change the saddle vinyl, which started cracking after the 6th year (very cheap to replace). The rear shock is too soft after nine years of overloading but no reason to change it at the moment, it's only a matter of comfort. All in all I anticipate I could squeeze out of this scooter another 18K miles before I would need serious maintenance / repair, since it is currently running like on day one....

Using proper oil and checking tyre pressure regularly (once per month) is all I do....

so, please, don't look down on these 50cc!

My first road bike (some 47 years ago!) was a Honda 50cc scoot. It covered 25,000 miles with just normal servicing and nothing else. Still fit as a fiddle when I sold it. The most miles I've seen on a GTS300 is now 78,000 miles and a GTS250 with over 80,000 miles. Both coming in for service in a couple of weeks and both still fit as a fiddle according to the owners. Those mileages are pretty normal if you have it serviced right. How you ride it doesn't make too much difference in terms of longevity, accept maybe if you WOT it all the time, then that's not so good for it and does tend to wear out the top end more quickly.

Regarding my Burgman 400, the mark seems good for anywhere up to and above the 100,000 mile mark with only normal servicing and a couple of clutches/variators.

50cc 2-stroker? 10k and rebuild? Bad advice. Stop selling that BS because you are wrong. Good oil and breaking-in properly should get you 20k at least.

Depends hugely on the make and model. Got a Honda cub 50 from 1979, if you to Thailand or Cambodia etc you'll see those still pottering about used daily. The little strokers don't last as long but there's not so many 2 strokes around now it seems.

QS a warm aloha and welcome to the forum from Hawaii. XLR8 isn't on here anymore (hasn't posted in over a year. I also think he was a bit harsh. Had a Abruzzi (Honda Met knockoff) that had over 40,000 on it when i finally stopped putting money into it. Paid $450 for it used. I have a LX 1150 that's 9yrs old and has over 37,000 miles on him. Knocks on wood but he's still going. I keep up with the maintenance.

Depending on how old it is ( technically/ metallurgy), and mostly how well it is maintained and used. I had a (bought new) Kawasaki 90 when I was 15 yrs old. Had 73,000 miles (and 6 Pistons later) before it got ran over. Still ran good (68 mph wot). And I rode it everywhere( no other wheels until yrs later).

Had 8,800 miles on Honda Elite 80 with no appreciable change in performance from new. No leaks, same starting ease, same compression, etc. Don't know how long it will last.

hi all, my 2008 300cc GTS Super has approx 48000kms! I always use the best fuel available though, no biggie coz it only costs me roughly $9 to fill up. I did cheap out once and put the cheap fuel in it and the bike ran rough.

That is how far Rocket's engine got before the upcoming transplant.

It has been giving me trouble, throwing variator nuts several times over the past two years. I don't know why, as the other two GT's hold that nut just fine after installing the exact same way.

Then a week ago, while on a short ride, I heard a loud noise accompanied by no power. I stopped, checked it out, and the spark plug had blown out of the head. I screwed it back in and rode it home.

This Saturday, I wanted to tighten it up and found it to simply spin in the hole. I can now slide it in to fully seated without screwing at all. Threads are totally stripped.

So, I am left with a need to repair the scooter. Luckily, I bought an engine from a wrecked GT last year. It had 6,000 miles on it at the time of the accident. Because it is sitting in my garage, it only makes sense to go ahead and make the change.

Drop the engine, take it to a shop and have them install a Heli Coal. Spark plug hole fixed.

I considered that, or buying a new Malossi cylinder and head, but the new engine is just sitting there and should last another ten years in Rocket.

That's the best idea. But if you want a stock head, I've got a couple sitting in the shed.

How many miles does the average moped last?

Mopeds are normally slower. People try simple ways to make them faster and they break down quicker because of it. I would estimate they last 500 to 3000 miles before they break down. Both scooters and mopeds are great bikes for riding around town and should not be ridden 10000 - 40000 miles either.

What is the lifespan of a 50cc moped?

The general rule of thumb is that a 2-stroke scooter engine will last beyond 30,000km assuming a normal servicing schedule is being kept up. Having said that we have customers with over 50,000km on their little 50cc scooter and they still run fine!

How many miles is too many miles on a scooter?

There is no definitive answer to this question as it depends on a variety of factors, including the make and model of the scooter, the weight of the rider, and how often the scooter is used. However, most scooters can travel between 30 and 50 miles before needing to be replaced.

How long can a scooter last?

Rental electric scooters have an average lifespan of 1-5 months. Privately-owned e-scooters with proper care and maintenance tend to last at least 2-3 years or longer.
