The County of San Diego offers Voluntary Short-Term Disability Insurance with Paid Family Leave, administered by Lincoln Financial Group (LFG). Short-Term Disability (STD)When a non-work-related illness or injury makes it impossible for you to work for a short period of time, STD guards you against financial loss and helps protect your income.
Please Note: Effective January 1st, 2022, employees no longer need to exhaust vacation balances to utilize the STD benefit. Paid Family Leave (PFL)We are adding a Paid Family Leave enhancement to our Voluntary Short-Term Disability plan! The PFL enhancement provides benefit payments to employees to take time off work to:
This enhancement is designed to be similar to the Paid Family Leave benefit that is provided through the CA/SDI program.
The PFL benefit will be available for qualifying events occurring January 1st, 2022 or later. Click here to read FAQs and scenarios related to the new PFL benefit. STD insurance can help financially protect you and your loved ones if you miss work due to sickness, injury, surgery or recovery from childbirth. Here’s how it works: First, you use sick leave or paid time off to cover the elimination period (a set timeframe based on your policy). After that, you receive a portion of your weekly salary as a cash benefit to help ease the financial burden while you’re away from work. What can the money be used for? Most anything – from groceries to mortgage payments and everything in-between – until you return to work or your coverage period ends.
